In spite of this, if you’re short on cash and looking for a word processor for free, check out Bean (Leopard users click-> 3.09) (Tiger users click-> 2.45). Many times, we would find random things formatted incorrectly after moving the file to a computer with Microsoft Office…which can be quite irritating. It’s not that we think they are bad programs, but we’ve often ran into problems when opening an OpenOffice file that was supposedly compatible with Microsoft Office. Some people are big fans of using OpenOffice (among other open source word processors), but we’ve never been a fan of them. Microsoft Office 2008 is the newest Microsoft Office version for PowerPC Macintoshes and will run quite well on any G5.

If you feel it’s running too slowly, give an earlier version a try…but it’s unlikely that’ll happen. iWork ’09 has support for all G5 Macintoshes. Word Processing/Office : iWork ’09, Microsoft Office 2008, and Bean. Also, Leopard has much more up to date software support compared to Tiger, which is quickly becoming (if not already) abandoned by most software providers. Every G5 processor has more than enough power to run Leopard. Otherwise, we see no reason to run anything other than Leopard on a G5. Leopard doesn’t run ANY OS 9 applications, so stick with Tiger if you need to run OS 9 applications. Operating System: OS 10.5 “ Leopard” or OS 10.4 “ Tiger.” To be quite honest, we see no reason to run Tiger unless you explicitly prefer it or have software needs that require it (like the Classic Environment).

Here’s our recommendations for Macintosh users with PowerPC G5 Processors:
